Luke 22:24-30 | Part 1
Jesus Is Easter series 2023
Jesus is the Greatest servant
Jesus is the Perfect sacrifice
Jesus is the Only Savior
This week I was angry. I was angry that innocent lives were lost, among them three 9-year-olds. I was angry that our government politicized it. I was angry that online chatter was more about debate than sadness. I was angry that I couldn’t do anything about it. Maybe some of you feel this same way.
What can we do? Jesus gives us a way to lead in all of the depravity and pain around us today. Jesus shows us that real, eternal change comes from servitude, not power, not platform, and not politics.
Next week is Easter. We celebrate the resurrection.
Timeline:
Palm Sunday(Sunday)
Jesus rides into Jerusalem like a King
Praised and honored by the people
This is after 3 years of miracles, phenomenal teaching, and Jesus teaching them how to be a servant leader
Fig Tree(Monday/Tuesday)
Jesus curses the fig tree because it did not bear fruit
The next day the tree is completely withered
Jesus was showing His disciples that faith in God is powerful, it's not just a feeling
Plot to kill Jesus(Wednesday)
Judas Iscariot filled with evil bargains for Christ’s life
Judas stole money (John 12:6)
Judas never called Jesus Lord, only Rabbi
Bottom line, Judas did not believe Jesus was the Christ
Last Supper(Thursday)->
Jesus washes the disciple's feet including Judas
Jesus sends Judas out
Jesus offers a new covenant through His blood
Then the head to the garden of Gethsemane
Luke 22:24 | Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.
Where were they when this dispute started?
what??
You have seen Jesus's miracles, you have watched him, you have experienced his power, been present as He has shown mercy, He has just washed your feet and cared for you and your #1 desire is to establish your greatness?
Luke 22:25 | But he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them have themselves called ‘Benefactors.’
1.) Leadership is not to be used for a personal platform (look at me)
Leadership is to be used to focus on other's needs (look to the need)
Romans 12:10 | Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
2.) Leadership is not to be used to elevate power (I’m greater than you)
Leadership is to be used to work together in the body (You are greater than me)
1st Corinthians 12:27 | Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.
3.) Leadership is not to be used for domination (do what I say)
Leadership is to be used for the subjugation of self (do what I do)
1st Corinthians 9:19 | Although I am free from all and not anyone’s slave, I have made myself a slave to everyone, in order to win more people.
Luke 22:26 | It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving.
Jesus commands us to not be like this. Ever. Don’t be a worldly leader!
How should we lead?
Two ways to be a Godly leader:
1.) If you have a leadership position, be like you were when you were a new Christian
1st Timothy 4:12 | Don’t let anyone despise your youth, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.
2.) Be a servant to those you lead
Luke 22:27a | For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table?
Worldly standards: The one who serves is less than, the one who is served, greater
Godly standards: The one who demands service, is less than, the one who serves, greater
Luke 22:27b-30 | But I am among you as the one who serves. 28 You are those who stood by me in my trials. 29 I bestow on you a kingdom, just as my Father bestowed one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. And you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Jesus, who is God is the chief servant
Jesus clarifies that there will be a new kingdom, and that they will be a part of it
Application for this season:
1.) Opportunity to serve your family and friends
2.) A chance to reevaluate, who do you think is the greatest?
